A budget is essential to managing a chapter, and the Treasurer should work with the executive committee and staff to develop an annual budget. The budget is an important management tool and shows your members how their dues are being spent. Your budget should be reviewed and updated throughout the year to pinpoint any variances or trends. To help prepare your budget, we've put together a budget template for chapters to use. 

Does your governance model resemble a smothered hamburger? Have extra layers such as cheese, tomatoes, bacon, etc. been added? These extras may be good on a burger, but they should be avoided when it comes to governance, as many times it results in bigger boards, lengthy processes, unnecessary filters and stifled progress. On Monday, NAIFA kicked off a week-long leadership training program for state and local chapter leaders, with keynote speaker Bob Harris, CAE. Bob, who is known around the world for sharing best practices and promoting sustainability of associations and chambers, presented, "Building Your Best Board," to more than 150 leaders from across the country.

October's Monthly Leader Webinar focused on the One NAIFA message as NAIFA Nation comes together in support of NAIFA-New York. The webinar featured guest speakers NAIFA President Cammie Scott and NAIFA Secretary Larry Holzberg. In addition, the following staff members provided important updates within their respective departments.

In the last week of California's 2019 legislative session, legislators introduced AB 5. The controversial bill included a new rigid standard, requiring many independent contractors, including insurance agents and advisors, to become W-2 employees of each of their connected carriers.

Bob Harris, NAIFA Blueprint keynote speaker, recently had an article published in MultiBriefs on how to advance the mission and strategic goals of boards. Specifically, the article focuses on how the standard board agenda typically includes dozens of reports and updates. Reading and listening to these reports is not good use of board time, as a board should be focusing their meeting time on strategic discussion.
