CHAPTER PLAYBOOK

Board Orientation

Board Orientation is an essential and critical component to a Chapter's success. Typically given each year, orientation serves as an educational tool for volunteers to understand their roles and responsibilities, as well as those responsibilities more appropriately left to Chapter Staff. In addition, the purpose of Board Orientation is:

  • To understand governance and the governing documents.
  • To understand Chapter Staff’s management role.
  • To focus on the strategic direction, mission and goals of the organization.
  • Fiduciary duties; the trust of members in the Board of Directors.
  • Awareness of the organization and its resources (finances and people).
  • Risk awareness and avoidance.

To aid in the success of each Chapter's Board Orientation, the NAIFA Model Chapter Board Orientation can be downloaded and customized for each Chapter.

After Orientation, each board member should be asked to sign a Board of Directors Commitment Agreement. The Model Board of Directors Commitment Agreement includes required commitments and a confidentiality disclosure.
