CHAPTER PLAYBOOK

Responsibilities

The responsibilities of Chapter Staff will vary from Chapter to Chapter depending on the resources available to invest in Chapter Staff. Some Chapters contract with NAIFA or a third party Chapter management firm to fulfill their staffing requirements. Larger Chapters may directly employ multiple staff, including an association professional and various professional or administrative staff positions. Smaller Chapters may employ a single individual to serve in either a professional or administrative capacity and outsource some functions to a third party. Some Chapters may only be able to allocate enough resources to contract with administrative support on a part-time basis.

The responsibilities outlined in this section of the Chapter Playbook would ideally be performed by staff, so volunteers are freed up to function in a strategic capacity or perform functions that are more external facing versus operational or administrative. For the above scenarios, the chief staff executive would report to the Chapter’s Board of Directors, and additional staff and subcontractors would report to the chief staff executive.

The responsibilities span many skill sets, levels of experience and core competencies, so no one individual would encompass all these capabilities. If the Chapter resources will not accommodate multiple staff, then identify the core competencies you need to staff and outsource the remaining responsibilities to subcontractors or have volunteers assume them.
