CHAPTER PLAYBOOK

Board Culture

By definition, board culture is a broad set of traditions and habits developed over time that guide that behavior. Creating and sustaining a healthy board culture includes:

  • Engagement and Productive Discussions
  • Building Consensus
  • Dealing with Difficult People
  • Working Together to Make Difficult Decisions

If your board culture doesn’t support getting the work done efficiently and effectively, your success as an organization will be limited, even if you have the best plans and the best vision.

Establishing a healthy and sustainable culture doesn’t happen overnight. The key to success is having a conversation about where you are, and ultimately, where you would like to be. In order to help determine what a Chapter’s board culture is, the Chapter Board Culture Scorecard can help a board self-identify their current culture and whether or not it is where the board wants to be.
